We know that after purchasing your football kits you guys take a lot of pride in them and so do we. Whoever’s job it is to clean the kit , they need to get it right and avoid ruining the kit. This is why we’ve put together this short guide to help you in washing your football kits and keeping them in good condition.
First thing to address is: Nomatter how tempting it may be to leave your football kit in the bag or in a corner until you are ready to have laundry day , do not do it! It is best to remove the loose mud first and either pre soak or wash the kit as soon as you get home and you are guaranteed to have a simpler task. The quicker you act on any mud or grass stains, the more likely you are to get rid of them. You can soak your kit and the longer you leave the kit soaked the better. We’d recommend at least 2-4 hours, however leaving it overnight also works for the best results.Leaving a sweaty shirt unwashed for long will result in the odours setting permanently into the material. The standard fabric for football t-shirts is polyester mesh and it is easier to look after compared to cotton. Make sure you use cold water because hot water will set the stain into the fabric. One very important thing to note is to not use chlorine bleach, chlorine bleach and polyester don’t play well together, it can damage the synthetic material.
Also remember to separate colors when you wash your football kit. Split the washes into dark colors , whites and light colors because no matter the quality of the kit, they may still leak a small amount of color especially the first few washes.
Types of stains
Blood stain
Luckily most sports kits are made from synthetic fabrics which are generally easier to treat than natural fabrics such as cotton. The key to removing blood is to wash it out with cold water as soon as possible. The stain may still faintly show after rubbing with a normal bar of soap or liquid, hence you may want to add a stain removal product to the stain before laundering. You can soak your kit in water with all-fabric bleach.
Grass stain
Work from the backside of the fabric to push the stain back out rather than working it deeper. It’s easy for printed designs to crack and fade in the washing machine over time. This is why turning your kits inside out when washing is important, especially for the ones that are printed, to protect the print from peeling or cracking and also stop them from sticking together in the wash.
Drying Tip
It is best to air dry your football kit as this will guarantee that it doesn’t shrink. As tempting as it may be, do not tumble dry your kit. The heat of a tumble drier will damage your kit by fading the colours and may set any remaining stains deep in your kit.
